Which drinking water counts as public

Existing drinking-water points create a 300 m catchment (straight line). Points matching any of these rules are restricted and are not counted.

Matching rule ids are stored in the attribute restricted_by.

Access restricted

Only for customers, private, or no public access. It does not serve the general public.

  • Applies if: Access is customers (Customers only) or private (Private) or no (No access) or permit or permissive_customers
  • Matches: 5 of 1,021
  • Source: OSM tag access
  • Status: Assumption
  • Rule id: restricted_access

Indoors

Inside a building (e.g. a shop or university), usable only during opening hours. Not a public outdoor fountain.

  • Applies if: Indoors is yes (Yes)
  • Matches: 3 of 1,021
  • Source: OSM tag indoor
  • Status: Assumption
  • Rule id: indoor

Assumptions

OpenStreetMap is the only data source

Hydrants and drinking-water points are taken from OSM only. Objects not mapped in OSM are missing from the analysis. Where few drinking-water points are mapped, the coverage gap is overstated.
